Iowa Michigan Royster (1840-1863) of Raleigh, NC, joined the Philanthropic Society in 1856 and graduated with first honors in 1860. He was a tutor of ancient languages from 1860 to 1862. A lieutenant in the Confederate army, he died of wounds sustained in the retreat after the Battle of Gettysburg.
